Episode 7 – Author Interview: Zoraida Córdova

Zoraida Córdova, YA authorIn the quest for the Sea Throne, Tristan has already watched one good friend die. Now he must lead the rest on a dangerous voyage in search of the trident that will make him king.

With Robin off to school, Cyna and I sat down for a chat with Zoraida Córdova (zoraidacordova.com), author of The Vicious Deep and The Savage Blue. Then something went horribly wrong… And by that, I mean that the original podcast recording vanished into nothing. To my amazement, Ms. Zoraida eagerly agreed to join me again the NEXT DAY to re-record! She is amazeballs like that.

So special thank you to Zoraida, to Jay the intern for setting this up, and to Cyna for trusting me to get this take done right all by myself. Go on and give the interview a listen to learn more about Z, her merfolk world, the tropes she actively sought to avoid and subvert, and if Cyna should regret giving me the reigns! Mwuahaha! (…mostly this consists of me saying “excellent” and “ok” and “mmhmm” far too many times. >.< )

Also! This podcast premieres a small feature I’ve been eager to share at the end of the ‘cast:

New & Notable – new-to-the-shelves YA books that we have not yet read, but whose synopses really piqued our interest!

Another great podcast, guys! I really am enjoying Papercuts Podcast, you guys are all so witty and clever and articulate. I will definitely have to download all of them for my roadtrip (Scotland to France).
Zoraida – wow. I had been in despair as to the state of YA in recent years, but I think she may have blown away all of my doubts. She sounds so intelligent and managed to phrase everything so perfectly. She obviously knows what she’s talking about, and seem to have a great idea of what is needed in the market, balancing old tropes with new takes and subversions. I really want to read both of her books now! The next interviewee will have a tough time outdoing this. 🙂
How do you arrange the interviews with the authors, may I ask?

Eibhlín, thank you so much for your kind words! It’s shocking (in a good way!) to see we have several international listeners. I hope your road trip is awesome–have you been to France before? I have not, but certainly hope to visit some day (my partner has visited Scotland for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and loved it there.)

      Z. was an amazing first guest! I hope that you do get a chance to check out her series; let us know what you think when you do? 😀

As for how we arrange interviews, I have just a few contacts at publishing houses with some publicity folks for virtual book tours. So, in that way, the authors come to us through their marketing department! Hope that answers your question. ^_^

      Thanks for listening!

Don’t thank me, I wish I could say more without repeating myself. I’m really looking forward to your next podcast (Alpha Bitches for the win! XD)
I have been in France before, a few times, anyway, and it is very beautiful. I hope you get to go soon! 🙂 I’m not anyway near Edinburgh, but I have visited a few times.
I plan to buy the series as soon as possible, and I’m pretty certain it will be awesome. 🙂 I’ll let you know!
        Thanks for your kind reply.

EDIT – nevermind, Alpha Bitches is out already. Yay! Off I go to listen.
Also, small aside – Praefotia. Is it any good? It looks brilliant, I wish I had written it. 🙂
With any luck, you’ll have several international listeners soon – I hope you don’t mind but I’ve mentioned it to a few friends. 🙂 Best of luck!
